Located in Simeulue and Banyak Islands, Northern Sumatra, Gunturs is a quality right-hand reef break that offers up playful walls when smaller but turns into a steep, slabbing barrel at size. The waves here are challenging to surf and break for up to 50 meters over a coral bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Gunturs?
Gets good between waist high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard here when smaller and a step up as the size increases. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the North. The best swells are from the South, Southwest, and West. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year-round. In the summer water temperatures rise to 29 degrees before dropping only to 25 in the winter. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
