On the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Ocean Grove is a mediocre beach break over a sandy beach. It is very sheltered, which makes the waves that can break up to 50 meters easy to surf. The waves here are usually soft and chill, perfect for learning or cruisey longboarding.
What are the best surf conditions for Ocean Grove?
The waves here are best between waist high to head high, it usually doesn’t get any bigger. This is definitely a longboard or fish spot. Keep the shortboard in the car. The beach can accommodate all levels, great for beginners to learn, and great for advanced surfers to chill and hang ten. The surf here is pretty consistent (7/10). The crowds during the summer holidays are astronomical on the beach which does bleed into the lineup, but in winter the beach and break are mostly empty (5/10). The best wind is from the North, and it works on all tides. The best swell direction is from the Southwest.
In summer we recommend a 3/2 wetsuit with water temps hovering around 16 degrees in February. In winter the temperature drops to around 12 degrees, so bring a 4/3 wetsuit. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
