Out around the rocks at South Avalon is a reef/point that produces super-sucky hollow waves over shallow slabby reef. A favourite with the bodyboarders and experienced short boarders.
Paddle out is either off the rocks or a decent paddle off the beach. The wave stands up quickly and throws over making for great barrels or nasty wipeouts. Breaks from between waist-high to triple overhead. The bigger the wave, the heavier it gets.
Can get crowded when it is on so just wait your turn and show respect. The wave can produce heaven or hell for the good surfer!
What are Little Avalon’s best surf conditions?
We recommend riding your standard shortboard when it’s bigger here. Little Avalon in Sydney’s Northern Beaches is best suited to advanced surfers, it usually has a wave (5/10) and gets ridiculously crowded when it’s on (9/10). The best winds for Little Avalon are west. The best swell direction is from the East, South and Southeast. It prefers mid tide.
