In South San Diego County, Southern California, Mission Beach is a pretty average beach break that peels over a sand bottom. The waves here are straightforward to surf and break for up to 50 meters providing great sections for turns and airs. Needs a smaller and peaky swell to be good.
What are the best surf conditions for Mission Beach?
Only really works between waist high and overhead, a shortboard is best here. Mission Beach will have something on tap for all levels of surfers. The surf here usually is breaking (7/10) but can get quite crowded (8/10). The best winds are offshore from the East, the best swells come from the Northwest, South, Southwest, or West. Mission Beach is only surfable on higher tides.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to a warm 20 degrees. In the winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 wetsuit when the temps drop to a chilly 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
