Located in La Jolla, San Diego County, California, Simmons Reef is a quality right-hand reef set-up that offers up a heavy barreling peak when the conditions line up. The waves here can be pretty heavy and break for up to 100 meters over a reef.
What are the best surf conditions for Simmons Reef?
Gets good between chest high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or a step-up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is not consistent (3/10) and will get insanely crowded (9/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the Northwest and West. Works on a low to mid tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 20 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temperatures rise to 15 degrees. See the temperature chat below for more data on this.
