Located in La Jolla, San Diego County, California, Big Rock is a fun reef break that offers up a good left-hand barrel when the conditions line up. The waves here can be challenging to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a rocky bottom. Watch out for the rocks, don’t go straight.
What are the best surf conditions for Big Rock?
Gets good between waist-high and overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is not the most consistent (5/10) and will get busy but not too crowded really (5/10). The best winds are from the North. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on a mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 here in the summer when water temps climb to 20 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temperatures drop to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
