Located in Sumba, Indonesia, Nihiwatu (Occy’s Left) is an excellent reef break that offers up long barrels or performance walls depending on the tide. The waves here are pretty heavy and break for up to 300 meters over a coral reef. The bigger the better here. The resort out front claims exclusive access to the reef, so stay with them if you want to surf this wave.
What are the best surf conditions for Occy’s Left?
Gets good between waist high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South or Southwest. Works on all tides, lower for more barrels.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year round. Water temperatures range from 28 to 25 year round. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
