Located in Biarritz/Anglet in France, Guethary is an excellent reef break that has been compared to Hawaii’s Sunset Beach when it’s good. The waves here are heavy and break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a rock bottom. Currents are also strong here, so bring a bigger board and your paddling chops to have a good time.
What are the best surf conditions for Guethary?
It gets good from waist-high to triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard, step-up, or gun here; basically anything with enough foam to get you in early. This break is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is not the most consistent (3/10) and can get quite crowded when it does break (8/10). The best winds are from the east and southeast. The best swells are from the northwest and west. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a spring suit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 21°C (70°F). In winter, a 5/4 wetsuit is the call when water temperatures drop to 12°C (54°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
