Located in Kwazulu Natal – South, South Africa, St. Mikes is an excellent right-hand point/reef setup that offers up a steep takeoff into a speeding hollow section before finishing off on the inside beach break. The waves here are challenging to surf, especially at size, and break for up to 200 meters (656 feet) over a rock and sand bottom. Easy access when smaller off the rocks at the top of the point. Harder access when bigger.
What are the best surf conditions for St. Mikes?
St. Mike gets good between chest high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and will always have a crew on it (7/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the South and Southeast. Works best on a mid to high tide.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year-round here. Water temperatures range between 27°C (80.6°F) in January and 22°C (71.6°F) in winter. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
