Located in Durban, South Africa, Umalanga Rocks is an alright beach break that throws up some barreling peaks. The waves here are pretty easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a rock and sand bottom. Not really a great spot, used to be better.
What are the best surf conditions for Umalanga Rocks?
Umalanga Rocks gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here usually has something to ride (5/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the East, Northeast, South, Southeast, or Southwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in summer when water temperatures rise to 26°C (78.8°F). In the winter, a spring suit might be best as temps drop to about 21°C (69.8°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
