Located in Durban, South Africa, South Beach is a poor beach break that offers up some mostly closeout peaks when a massive south swell wraps into the bay. The waves here are easy to surf and break for up to 50 meters (164 feet) over a sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for South Beach?
South Beach gets good between waist-high and overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if small and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is good for all levels of surfer. The surf here is inconsistent (4/10) and will get busy at peak times (5/10). The best winds are from the West. The best swells are from the South and Southeast. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in summer when water temperatures rise to 26°C (78.8°F). In the winter, a spring suit might be best as temps drop to about 21°C (69.8°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
