Located in Costa Verde, Peru, Makaha is a fun beach break that offers up some slopey, rippable waves that border a jetty with a famous restaurant. The waves here are easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters (about 328 feet) over a boulder and sand bottom. Paddling around for the outside sets can be difficult, so bring a floaty board. This is one of the centres of Peruvian surf culture, so have fun!
What are the best surf conditions for Makaha?
Makaha gets good between waist-high and head-high, but it will close out when bigger. We recommend riding a longboard here most days and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer; beginners will love the inside reforms. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and will always have a crew (7/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the Northwest, South, Southwest, and West. Works on all tides but is probably better at lower ones.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 22°C (about 72°F). In the winter, a 3/2 wetsuit is best when water temperatures drop to 16°C (about 61°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
