Located in Sutherland, Scotland, Sandwood Bay is a decent beach break that offers up some fun waves with good sections for performance manoeuvres. The waves here require a bit of skill to surf and break for up to 50 meters over a sand bottom. There’s a river mouth and a couple of reefs nearby, remote with great potential. A 5-mile hike in keeps the crowds down. Secluded and open to most swell.
What are the best surf conditions for Sandwood Bay?
Gets good between waist high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer, but know your limits: help is a long way away. The surf here is pretty consistent (5/10) and will be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the North, Northwest, and West. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a 5/4 here year-round. Water temps rise to 13 degrees in July before dropping to 7 in the winter. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
