Located a little west of Lorne on Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Wye River is a fun and sandy beach break near the rivermouth. Some waves can be challenging, but the beach does accommodate all levels, providing fun sections for all types of manoeuvres. Watch out for a great pub overlooking the surf, as well as some lovely campgrounds in the area.
What are the best surf conditions for Wye River?
Gets good between waist-high to triple overhead. We recommend riding your standard shortboard when bigger here although most other craft will work here depending on the size and day. Wye River is best suited to beginner to advanced surfers. The beach here usually picks up swell (6/10) and you can score uncrowded waves most of the time (4/10). The best winds for Wye River are Northwest, it works best on all tides depending on the sandbanks. The best swell directions are from the South and Southwest.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in summer with the warmest water temperature a chilly 16 degrees in February. In winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 wetsuit with temps being a brisk 12 degrees! See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
