Located on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, Virgin Point is a quality left-hand point break that handles big size and offers up big gaping barrels and performance walls. This is a heavy spot, though; you’ll have to scramble down a steep mountainside and hop off the rocks to access the point, a difficult task to accomplish without wrecking your board, and don’t forget the way back up! The waves themselves are heavy and break for up to 200 meters (656 feet) over a boulder-covered bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Virgin Point?
Virgin Point gets good between head high (2 meters / 6.5 feet) and triple overhead (5.5 meters / 18 feet). We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is good for advanced surfers only. The surf here usually has something to ride (5/10) and will only have a few hardcore locals on it (3/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the Southwest. Works best on a mid to high tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19 degrees Celsius (66°F). In winter, a 4/3 is best when temps drop to 15 degrees Celsius (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
