Located on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, Koeelbay (Caves) is an excellent right-hand point break that offers up fast and deep barrels. The waves here require some skill to surf and break for up to 150 meters (492 feet) over a rock and sand bottom. It’s a beautiful spot with epic scenery.
What are the best surf conditions for Koeelbay (Caves)?
Koeelbay (Caves) gets good from waist-high to triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is good for all levels of surfer. The surf here is super consistent (9/10) and will get busy at peak times (5/10). The best winds are from the East and Southeast. The best swells are from the Southwest, and it works when the swell is tiny. Works on a low to mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19 degrees Celsius (66.2 degrees Fahrenheit). In winter, a 4/3 is best when temps drop to 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
