Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Barra da Tijuca is a fun stretch of beach break west of downtown Rio that offers up some fun waves for all levels of surfer. The waves here are easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a sand bottom. It can get hollow at times but usually not.
What are the best surf conditions for Barra da Tijuca?
It gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard, then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is very consistent (8/10) and will get busy at peak times but it is a long beach (5/10). The best winds are from the North. The best swells are from the East, South, and Southeast. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summers when water temperatures rise to 26°C (79°F). In the winter, a spring suit will work when water temperatures drop to 21°C (70°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
