Located in between Trestles and Trails, San Diego County, San Onofre State Beach is a fun reef/cobblestone set-up that offers up mellow lefts and rights for beginners and longboarders. The waves here are pretty easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a cobblestone reef. There are three main breaks: Dogpatch, The Point, and Old Mans.
What are the best surf conditions for San Onofre State Beach?
Gets good between waist-high and overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and bigger here. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here usually has a wave (5/10) and will get somewhat busy on certain summer days (5/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the Southwest. Works on a low to mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 20 degrees. In winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 when water temperatures drop to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
