Located in Northern San Diego County south of Trestles, Southern California, Trails is a long collection of mediocre beachies that break over sand. Some of the waves here can be a bit tricky to surf, and break for up to 100 meters providing sections fit for turns and hacks.
What are the best surf conditions for Trails?
Gets good between waist high and double overhead, although it doesn’t handle size very well. We recommend a longboard when smaller and a shortboard if it gets a bit bigger. Trails is suited to all levels of surfers depending on the size of the swell. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and definitely uncrowded for San Diego standards (4/10). Needs a smaller and peakier swell from the South, Southwest, or West to work well. Offshore winds come from the Northeast. Needs a mid-tide for most sandbars here.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temps rise to 20 degrees. In the winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 wetsuit when water temps drop to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
