Located in Del Norte, California, Whaler Island is a fun right-hand reef break that offers up a great barreling right when the conditions line up. The waves here are not the easiest to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a rock bottom. The locals here are none too nice. This break is right off the Crescent City Harbor jetty.
What are the best surf conditions for Whaler Island?
Gets good between chest high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then a step-up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here sometimes has a wave (4/10) and will get busy at certain times with grumpy locals (5/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the Northwest and punchy. Works best on a low tide.
We recommend wearing a 5/4 here year-round. Water temperatures range between 9 and 13 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
