Located in the Pais Vasco, Spain, La Arena is a fun beach break that offers up some decent sections for manoeuvres when the conditions are good. This spot is pretty easy to surf and the waves break for up to 50 meters over a sand bottom. This break is quite close to Bilbao, so the water is not the cleanest. It also lies next to a large oil refinery which makes the air a little unpleasant to breathe.
What are the best surf conditions for La Arena?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard when the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will usually have a couple of people on it, and more on the weekends (6/10). The best winds are from the South. The best swells are from the North, Northwest, and West. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a springsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 21 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when water temps drop to 13 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
