Located in Madeira, Portugal, Ponta Paul is an excellent right-hand point break that offers a dangerously fast and shallow barreling wave. This spot is heavy, the waves break almost right onto exposed rock for up to 200 meters. Only a few here have surfed the wave, and most have a story about someone who got into a hairy situation trying. Very hard to paddle into and if you fall or miss the drop its onto the dry rocks for you.
What are the best surf conditions for Ponta Paul?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or a step-up here as the size increases. This break is best suited to advanced and professional surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and empty (1/10). The best winds are from the North. The best swells are from the North, Northwest, and West. Works on a low to mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 18 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temperatures drop to 13 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
