Avalanche is the long heavy left that breaks off the coast, behind Les Alcyons and on the opposite side of Parlementia. This spot is one of the legendary world-class reef of Guéthary, very popular with the surfers ready to charge. Indeed, it only starts working when the waves hit 8ft and can hold up to 30ft or even more with the perfect conditions. Of course, tow crews also frequent the line-up.
You will be able to check Avalanche from the magnificent Guéthary’s terrace that overlooks the spot, but keep in mind that it often looks smaller than what it really is. Only very experienced surfers or kamikazes should give it a go with the right equipment. A sharper gun than the one you would use to surf Parlementia is compulsory if you want to give yourself a chance to catch a wave.
Avalanche is a 20-minute paddle out the back. It breaks in deep water and reaches its full potential at low tide, with a NW swell and SE wind. After a big drop when taking-off and a huge bottom turn, the wave can offer either super hollow sections or big steep walls.
But if you might get the best wave of your life, you might also be forced to deal with the gnarliest wipe-out of your surfing career. Be ready to spend time under water, put up with the endless sets, get stuck in the impact zone… In a nutshell, never forget to respect this powerful wave. Not forgetting the locals, who could be good advice/help in case you need it.
