Located in South Africa on the Cape Peninsula, Buffels Bay is an excellent but rare right-hand point break that offers classic barreling and rippable walls when an enormous South swell hits. This spot is very well protected by locals, so it’s best to make a friend to surf out here. The waves here are challenging to surf and break for up to 500 meters (1640 feet) over a boulder-covered bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Buffels Bay?
Buffels Bay gets good between head high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced level surfers. The surf here is somewhat inconsistent (4/10) and will get very crowded when on (8/10). The best winds are from the North. The best swells are from the South. It works best on a mid to high tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19°C (66°F). In the winter, a 4/3 is best when temperatures drop to 15°C (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
