Located in between Portsea and Flinders in Victoria, Gunnamatta is an excellent, sandy beach break. The waves here are punchy and tricky and can break for up to 100 meters, serving up both right and left barrels up and down the beach.
What are the best surf conditions for Gunnamatta?
Gets good between waist-high to double overhead. We recommend riding your longboard or standard shortboard when bigger here. Gunnamatta is best suited to beginner to advanced surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and can get busy at peak times (5/10). The best winds for Gunnamatta are Northeast, although small variation is fine. The crescent shape of the beach guarantees that it will be offshore somewhere. It works on all tides depending on the sandbars. The best swell direction is from the South and Southwest. There is also a webcam, so check it before going!
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in summer with the warmest water temperature a brisk 16 degrees in February. In winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 wetsuit with temps being a brisk 12 degrees! See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
