Sawtell beach serves up consistent, fun peaks in most swells. On larger swells, look for the big sandbank that builds between the headland and the reef (Sawtell Island) at the southern end of the beach, which can produce classic long, fast rights.
What are the best surf conditions for Sawtell?
Gets good between head-high to overhead. We recommend riding your standard shortboard or longboard here. Sawtell is best suited to beginner to advanced surfers. The surf here is very consistent (8/10) and can get ridiculously crowded (7/10). The best winds for Sawtell are West. The best swell direction is from the SouthEast
Make sure you check south side of the headland which can turn on nice lefts off the rockpool, and protection in North Easters.
In summer we recommend wearing a spring suit, the warmest water temperature a pleasant 21 degrees in January. In winter we recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit with temps being a brisk 16 degrees! See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
