The Wreck in Byron Bay is a fun reef break breaking over the old shipwreck and pier, hence the name. You can still see the wreck that sticks out above the water. It’s a pretty short punchy wave with its fair share of closeouts. Some waves can be challenging and can break for up to 50 meters, providing fast sections that demand a speed pump or two.
What are the best surf conditions for The Wreck?
The wave is a fast beach break that can be fun but rarely perfect. Waves break left and right and start breaking at 1ft up to about 6ft. As soon as there is a wave the crowd comes. Due to its easy access and location, it does get crowded.
A fun wave but not the best in the region. Worth a dig for a late arvo session and then head to the pub across the road.
We recommend riding your standard shortboard here. The Wreck in Byron is best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and can get insanely crowded especially in summer (10/10). The best winds for The Wreck are South. The best swell direction is from the East.
