Located in Monterey County, California, Spanish Bay/South Moss Beach is a beach break with a few options that all offer rippable peaks. The Northern peak is called Dunes and is a right-hand wall breaking over sand and rock. In the middle of the beach is a classic California beach break. The Southern peak is a left-hander breaking off of rock and sand. All are pretty easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a mixture of rock and sand. You’ll have to pay to access the road to get to the beach. Pebble Beach residents like to keep the riff-raff out… Alternatively, you could paddle a mile or two from the Southern end of Pacific Grove/Asilomar.
What are the best surf conditions for Spanish Bay?
Gets good between chest high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here if smaller and a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is not the most consistent (4/10) and will usually have a crew (6/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the Northwest and West. Works on a low to mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 4/3 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 15 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when water temperatures drop to 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
