Located in the Pais Vasco, Punta Galea is one of Europe’s premier big wave spots. This wave is a point/river mouth break that provides some excellent, long, and massive rides when the conditions line up. The waves here are difficult to surf and break for up to 200 meters over a boulder-covered bottom. The spectators on the cliffs create an arena-like atmosphere, perfect for the Big Wave Tour events that have been held here since 2014.
What are the best surf conditions for Punta Galea?
Gets good from double overhead to tow in size. Bring a gun or a tow board, nothing less. This break is suitable only to advanced big wave riders or pros. The surf here hardly ever breaks well (2/10) and the size deters most, so crowds are not a factor (3/10). The best winds are from the South. The best swells are from the North and Northwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a springsuit here in the summer when water temperatures rise to 21 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when water temps plunge to 13 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
