Surfing Mundaka

Mundaka is a small town located in the Basque Country of northern Spain and is home to one of the most famous waves in Europe. The wave at Mundaka is a fast and hollow left-hand barrel, breaking over a shallow sandbar and the strong river current, providing a challenge for even the most experienced surfers. The line-up vibe can be competitive, especially during peak season, and local surfers can tend to be a little stand-offish. Make sure to be respectful and let them get the best waves.

To enter the water at Mundaka, surfers have to paddle through the river mouth, which can be challenging as the current is strong, and the sandbar is very shallow, making it essential to avoid hitting the bottom. Exiting the water can also be tricky, as surfers need to paddle back out through the same area they entered, timing it with the incoming sets to avoid getting caught inside.

History of Surfing at Mundaka

Mundaka’s surfing history dates back to the 1960s when a group of Basque surfers discovered the wave’s potential. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that Mundaka gained international recognition when it was included in the World Surfing Championship tour. Surfing legends like Mark Occhilupo, Tom Curren, and Kelly Slater have all surfed at Mundaka, contributing to the wave’s reputation as one of the best left-hand barrels in the world.

The Best Wave in Europe?

Mundaka is often referred to as the best wave in Europe due to its incredible power, speed, and barrel. The wave’s reputation has led to an increase in tourism in the region, with surfers from around the world flocking to Mundaka to test their skills. However, it’s worth noting that Mundaka is a very inconsistent wave, meaning it doesn’t break often, and when it does, it’s usually during the autumn and winter months.

Hazards of Surfing at Mundaka

While Mundaka is a world-class wave, it can be challenging and dangerous, especially for inexperienced surfers. The shallow sandbar and the strong river current can make it tricky to navigate, and the wave itself can be very powerful, requiring strong paddling skills and excellent timing. Additionally, the wave can be very crowded during peak season, with surfers jostling for position and collisions occurring.

Best Surf Conditions for Mundaka

The best time to surf Mundaka is during the autumn and winter months, from September to May, when the Atlantic swells are at their most consistent.

Basque Country

The Basque Country is a unique and beautiful region that is steeped in history and culture. While surfing is the main attraction for many visitors, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy if the surf is flat. One popular activity is hiking in the nearby Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, which offers stunning views of the coastline and wildlife. The region is also known for its cuisine, with pintxos (Basque tapas) and seafood being the local specialties. Finally, visitors can explore the charming towns and cities of the region, such as Bilbao, home to the famous Guggenheim Museum, or San Sebastian, known for its beautiful beaches and excellent food.

It’s important to note that the Basque Country has a unique culture and language, and visitors may find it helpful to learn a few basic phrases in Basque to communicate with locals. Additionally, the region is known for its vibrant surf culture, with many surf shops, schools, and festivals taking place throughout the year.

In conclusion, Mundaka is a world-class wave that attracts surfers from all over the globe. With its challenging and powerful barrel and the beauty of the Basque Country, it’s no wonder why this wave has gained a reputation as one of the best in Europe. However, surfing at Mundaka requires skill, experience, and respect for the local community and environment. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, Mundaka and the Basque Country offer a unique and unforgettable surfing experience.
