Located in Chicama, Peru, Punta Prieta is an excellent left-hand point break that offers up some barreling and rippable sections along one of the longest rides in the world. The waves here are not easy to surf and break for up to 600 meters (about 1969 feet) over a rock and sand bottom. Jelly legs are the biggest hazard here.
What are the best surf conditions for Punta Prieta?
Punta Prieta gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard when smaller and a shortboard then stepping up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures hit 25°C (about 77°F). In the winter, a 3/2 wetsuit is best when water temps drop to 21°C (about 70°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
