Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Itacoatiara is a quality reef break setup that offers up powerful, chunky, and at times hollow sections. The waves here are heavy and break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a rock and sand bottom. Popular with bodyboarders and skilful surfers.
What are the best surf conditions for Itacoatiara?
It gets good between head-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard, then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here usually has something to ride (5/10) and will generally have a crew (7/10). The best winds are from the North. The best swells are from the South, Southeast, and Southwest. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summers when water temperatures rise to 26°C (79°F). In the winter, a spring suit will work when water temperatures drop to 21°C (70°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
