Located in Pohnpei, Micronesia (Carolines), Walung is an excellent reef break that offers some heavy waves breaking over a coral bottom. The waves here can break for up to 200 meters (656 feet), providing fast sections that demand a speed pump or two.
What are the best surf conditions for Walung?
It gets good overhead. We recommend riding your standard shortboard when it’s bigger here. Walung is best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers. The surf here sometimes has waves (4/10) and is hardly ever crowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swell direction is from the Northwest, and it works well on a range of tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini, plus a wetsuit top in strong winds, in summer when the water temperature is a warm 28°C (82°F). In winter, we also recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini, plus a wetsuit top in strong winds, with temperatures being a mild 26°C (79°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
