Located in Pohnpei, Micronesia (Carolines), P-Pass (Palikir Pass, Pohnpei) is a world-class right-hand reef break that offers up either dreams or nightmares. This classic right-hander has holds well for varying conditions providing for a wide range of surfers, depending on the size of the swell, the direction, and the wind. The waves here can be quite heavy and break over a coral reef for up to 200 meters (656 feet), providing fun sections.
What are the best surf conditions for P-Pass (Palikir Pass, Pohnpei)?
It gets good between waist-high and triple overhead. In the 2-4ft range, the break offers something for everyone, while at 4-6ft, things start to get more serious with wide-open barrels. Anything above 6ft, if you’re brave enough, will offer up the waves of your lifetime. We recommend riding your standard shortboard when larger. P-Pass is best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers. The surf here sometimes has waves (4/10) and is hardly ever crowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swell direction is from the North and Northwest, and it works well on a range of tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini, plus a wetsuit top in strong winds, in summer when the water temperature is a warm 28°C (82°F).
