Located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, Bay Head is a fun beach break peppered with groynes that unload over well-defined sandbars. The waves here can be a bit tricky, and break for up to 100 meters, barreling over shallow sandbars. Fast right-hand barrels are common here.
What are the best surf conditions for Bay Head?
Gets good from chest high to double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard when smaller and a shortboard when bigger. This break is suited to all levels of surfers. The break here is somewhat consistent (5/10) and usually crowded when good but there are multiple peaks (7/10). The best winds are from the West. The best swells are from the South. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 23 degrees. In winter a 5/4 with a hood, booties, and gloves is necessary when the water temps drop to 4 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
