Located on the gulf coast of Texas, Matagorda is a fun beach break that crashes over a sand bottom. The waves here can be difficult to surf and break for up to 100 meters serving up barrels, yes barrels, in Texas. When conditions line up this break can feel like an open ocean wave. A little remote, so bring everything you need.
What are the best surf conditions for Matagorda?
Gets good from waist high to overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here most days and a shortboard when the size arrives. This break is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and can get busy when the swell is on (5/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the East, South, and Southeast. Works best on a low to mid-tide.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 30 degrees. In winter a 3/2 is best when water temps drop to 17 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
