Located in Charante Maritime, France, Chassiron is a premier rocky reef break that delivers quality lefts and rights with impressive walls for manoeuvres. The waves here can be challenging, breaking over a shallow, uneven rock shelf for up to 100 meters (328 feet). The reef is home to numerous urchins, so exercise caution when walking out.
What are the best surf conditions for Chassiron?
Chassiron shines between waist-high and double overhead. A longboard is recommended when the waves are smaller, while a shortboard or step-up is ideal as conditions intensify. This break is best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers. It is highly consistent (6/10) and typically attracts a crowd (7/10). The optimal winds are from the Southeast, and the best swells come from the Northwest, Southwest, and West. The spot works best on low to mid tides.
Peaks break over a rocky, uneven shelf, leading to long-walled lefts and shorter rights, particularly at lower tides. Be sure to exit at mid-tide before the surge over the reef. The strong rips and shallow, rocky bottom can be challenging, so it’s not recommended for inexperienced surfers. Wearing booties can help protect against urchins during the long walk across the fishing reef.
