Located in Southeastern Oahu, Makapu’u Point is a quality right-hand reef break that offers up a heavy barrel for the committed. The waves here are pretty damn heavy and break for up to 100 meters over a lava reef. The other name for this spot is “Suicides” which should tell you something about the make rate here. The beach on the inside is home to some of the best bodysurfing and bodyboarding in Hawai’i, but surfboards are off-limits.
What are the best surf conditions for Makapu’u Point?
Gets good between chest-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or a step-up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here usually has something to ride (5/10) and will generally have a crew (7/10). The best winds are from the Southwest. The best swells are from the East, Northeast, and Southeast. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year-round here. Water temperatures range from 27 to 24. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
