Located in the Northern Beaches of Sydney in New South Wales, Winki Pop is a quality right point break that detonates onto a shallow rock shelf. The waves here are usually heavy, breaking for up to 200 meters. The take off is sucky and fast, so most stick to the shoulder. The wave offers great sections for carves and turns all the way down the point. The cliffs overhead provide a peanut gallery, try not to get caught inside on the shelf, this will wound your pride and your body equally.
What are the best surf conditions for Winki Pop?
The point begins to light up between chest high and triple overhead. We recommend riding anything from a shortboard to a gun, the point can handle size. Intermediate and advanced surfers only, the shallow rock shelf will ruin any beginner surfer’s career. The surf here is usually breaking (5/10) but will always have at least a solid crew (7/10). The best winds come from the Southwest, the best tides are lower, and the best swells come from the East, Northeast, South, and Southeast. This spot does need a bigger swell to really get going.
We recommend boardshorts or bikinis plus a wetsuit top in the summer with water temperatures hitting 21 degrees in January. In winter a 3/2 is required as water temps plunge to 16 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
