Located in Iquique, Chile, Punta Gruesa is an excellent left reef that offers up more powerful barrels. The waves here are very difficult to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a shallow rock reef.
What are the best surf conditions for Punta Gruesa?
Gets good between chest-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate- and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is somewhat consistent (6/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on a mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini, plus a wetsuit top in strong winds, in summer with the warmest water temperature a warm 23°C (73°F) in January. In winter, we recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit with temps being a brisk 16°C (61°F)! See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
