Located in Antofagasta, Chile, La Cupula is an excellent reef break that offers up some long, barreling lefts when the conditions line up. The waves here are pretty heavy and break for up to 150 meters (492 feet) over a rock reef. Watch out for urchins and seashells which cover the rocks. It breaks best at 6-12ft (2-4m) and locals compare it to Tavarua
What are the best surf conditions for La Cupula?
It gets good between head high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard, and then a step up as the size increases. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and will always have a crew (7/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the Northwest, South, Southwest, and West. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a springsuit, in summer with the warmest water temperature at a pleasant 21°C (70°F) in January. In winter, we recommend wearing a 4/3 wetsuit, with temperatures being a brisk 15°C (59°F)! See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
