Located in the Outer Banks in North Carolina, Ocracoke is an OK beachy that breaks over shifty sandbars. The waves here require a bit of surf know how to surf well and break for up to 150 meters going from steep to mushy and then back to steep. The steep sections are quite fast. Park at the airport and walk to the beach.
What are the best surf conditions for Ocracoke?
Gets good from waist high to a little overhead. We recommend a longboard when smaller and your fastest shortboard when bigger. This break is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here usually has a wave (5/10) and will usually have a few guys out (6/10). The best winds are from the North, Northwest, and West depending on the part of the beach. The best swells are from the South and Southeast. Best at low to mid tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 28 degrees in August. In winter a 5/4 is best because water temperatures drop to around 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
