In western Ventura County, Southern California, Solimar Reef and Beach is a quality reef break that rolls over a boulder and sand bottom. The waves here are pretty heavy and break for up to 100 meters, offer up mostly rights that provide opportunities for large hacks and carves. Surrounded by thick kelp beds which protect it from most winds.
What are the best surf conditions for Solimar Reef and Beach?
Gets good between head high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard here. Solimar is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here usually is breaking (5/10) but can get busy on weekends and holidays (5/10). The best winds are from the Northeast, the best swells come from the Southwest, and the best tides are low.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 18 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temperatures drop to 13 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
