Located in South Orange County, California, Huntington State Beach stretches for a couple of miles south of Huntington Pier offering up some classic Socal breach break. The waves here are pretty straightforward to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a sand bottom. This beach loves a combo swell (think NW SW) to break up the walls and create beautiful peaks up and down the coast. It will be crowded but can be very high quality. Watch out for stingrays in the summer months.
What are the best surf conditions for Huntington State Beach?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here if smaller and a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will get insanely crowded (9/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the Northwest, Southwest, and West. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 20 degrees. In winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 when water temperatures drop to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
