Located in South Bay, Los Angeles County, Rat Beach is a fun reef break that offers up both lefts and rights usually easygoing and perfect for longboarding, rarely walled up and rippable. The waves here are pretty easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Rat Beach?
Gets good between waist-high and overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here most days and a shortboard when it does get bigger. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers, especially those looking to be introduced to reef breaks. The surf here usually has something to ride (5/10) and will get quite crowded (8/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the Northwest. Works on a low to mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19 degrees. In winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 when water temperatures drop to 14 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
