Located in Western Santa Barbara County, Southern California, Refugio state beach is an average point break that peels across a rock and sand bottom. The point is pretty mushy and slow, making the waves easy to surf for the full 150 meters that they break for. Perfect for longboarding and cruising. Camping nearby makes this a popular spot.
What are the best surf conditions for Refugio State Beach?
Gets good between waist high and double overhead. A longboard is the perfect board here for every day it breaks. This wave is best suited to beginners thru advanced surfers. The surf here is not the most consistent (4/10) and usually has a group due to the ease of the waves and campground (6/10). The best winds come from the North, the best swells are from the Northwest and West and big, it works on all tides.
We recommend wearing 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when the water temperature rises to 17 degrees. In the winter we recommend wearing a 4/3 when temps drop to 13 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
