One of the world’s most famous surf breaks, located in Northern Los Angeles County, First Point Malibu is one of the best point breaks in the world that peels over a rock and sand bottom. There are three sections to the wave, but First Point is the most widely known and surfed, it is also the most consistent. The waves here are gentle and break for up to 250 meters, offering up some smooth buttery perfection. The waves are perfect for most types of surfing: Cruising and ripping are both ideal. Be aware of very poor water quality after rains, infections are common.
What are the best conditions for Malibu First Point?
Breaks at all sizes, waist-high to triple overhead it will have great shape. Any surf craft will work here, a longboard for classic lines or a shortboard for ripping! Malibu is very accessible for all levels of surfers, beginners all the way to advanced will love the waves here. The surf here is quite consistent (7/10), however, the crowds here are insane (10/10), Good luck not getting dropped in on multiple times per wave. Offshore winds come from the North. The best swells are from the South, Southwest, or West. First point works on all tide levels, although faster and steeper at lower tides.
During summer we recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit as the water temperatures hover around 19 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temps drop to 14 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
