Located in Eastern Southern England, Birling Gap is a fun left and right reef break that offers up some good performance sections when the conditions line up. The waves here are pretty easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Birling Gap?
Gets good between waist high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced level surfers. The surf here does not break very often (3/10) and will usually have a crew (6/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the Southwest and West. Works best on a mid tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when the water temperatures rise to 17 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when water temperatures drop to 8 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
