Located in East London, South Africa, Nahoon Reef is an excellent right-hand reef break that many have described as a South African Sunset Beach. The waves here are heavy and break for up to 300 meters (984 feet) over a boulder-covered bottom with plenty of urchins. The wave is powerful and will offer up big walls as well as the odd barrel or two. Take care on the paddle out and be respectful, although the local vibe here is good. This spot is very sharky, with multiple attacks from Great Whites every year.
What are the best surf conditions for Nahoon Reef?
Nahoon Reef gets good between waist-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if small, a shortboard, then step up, and then the biggest board in your quiver as the size picks up. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will get busy at peak times (5/10). The best winds are from the Northwest, Southwest, and West. The best swells are from the East, Northeast, and Southeast. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 25°C (77°F). In the winter, a spring suit might be necessary as water temperatures drop to 20°C (68°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
