Located in Humboldt County, California, Third Reef is a good rocky reef set-up that offers up a challenging performance left-hander and a slower, mellower right-hander. The waves here can be a little tricky to surf and break for up to 200 meters over a rocky reef.
What are the best surf conditions for Third Reef?
Gets good between chest high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is not the most consistent (4/10) and will generally be uncrowded due to sharks and whatnot (3/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the West. Works on a low tide best.
We recommend wearing a 5/4 here year-round. Water temperatures range between 9 and 13 year round. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
